| The child spoken of in the poem is a free spirit. She does not wittingly flout the rules or defy the norms. She is inquisitive, longs to explore her world and if that means a tear in her Sunday best whilst she climbs a tree to look closer at a bird’s nest or to seek the horizon, well, it was worth it. However, such folk are not always understood and are often resented by others, too entrenched in rules and regulations to seek out the wonder around them. This girl will probably be destined to do something extraordinary or be pinioned by others, a clip winged bird, never allowed to fly. My late aunts, Mary Frances Stephens and Hessie Lindsell flew, this is for them! |
