Simone Wood Award, 2009: Award Winners!

We are pleased to announce the winners of the Simone Wood Award for 2009. The Simone Wood Award was put together by as a memorial for Simone Wood by her family, and is the first memorial award to be put together and hosted on our website. We were very excited when Simone Wood's family came to us with their idea for a memorial award that celebrated the things in life that Simone Wood loved, dance and children. The entire award has been generously donated by the family members, and Sharing Books has been honoured to be a part of this family legacy.

All the books submitted for the Simone Wood Award were children's books themed and focused on dance, dance culture, and the freedom of expression that comes with dance. Only books focused on dance and published through Sharing Books from April 3rd, 2009 to May 31st, 2009 were originally targeted for acceptance, but due to some server issues we extended the acceptance window to June 5, 2009. Award winners are determined by the highest number of downloads during the month of June, 2009. We thank all the authors, illustrators, and book creators who submitted dance themed work to the site.

Here, without further adieu, are the winners of the Simone Wood Award:

  1. 1st Place: Zoo Dance, authored by JR Poulter and illustrated by Jade Potts.
  2. 2nd Place: My Pretty Pointe Shoes, authored by Timothy Schenk and illustrated by Timothy Schenk.
  3. 3rd Place: Whop Bop Menagiere, authored by JR Poulter and illustrated by Joy Steuerwald.
Congratulations to our award winners!

The first place award is $300, second place will recieve $200, and third place will recieve $100, to be split evenly between the authors and illustrators.

Upload Problems Over the Weekend

So right as the final sprint for the Simone Wood Award, 2009 was underway a series of major failures occurred with our server. We are still trying to piece together what happened, and we will try to keep you informed. It involves multiple systems having multiple problems, and is proving a Gordian knot to untangle. So much like Alexander the great we took a knife to the knot, and the site is back to accepting books for publication.

We know that some people have not had their books properly upload over the last few days, so we are asking that they re-upload their books. We are going to give a grace window for the affected users over the weekend, allowing them to upload during this week until Friday, and accept them into the contest.

Further details on how this is going to affect the contest will be posted by Wednesday. We apologize for the inconvenience this is causing.

The Simone Wood Award, 2009

Sharing Books is pleased to announce the Simone Wood Award for Children’s Literature. Simone Wood was an avid supporter of dance and her family have launched this award on Simone’s birthday to honour her life-long passion that she gave to successive generations.

The Simone Wood Award is available to any book creators who publish their work through Sharing Books. Any of the children's books published on Sharing Books from April 3rd 2009 to May 31st 2009, with dance as their primary focus, will be automatically entered in the contest for the Simone Wood Award for Children’s Literature. • First Place award of $300 Canadian to the most downloaded book in June
• Second Place award of $200 Canadian to the second most downloaded book in June
• Third Place award of $100 Canadian to the third most downloaded book in June

Awards will be divided equally between the author and illustrator of illustrated works, or in granted in whole to the author in non-illustrated works.

And the winners are...

We are delighted to announce the winners of Sharing-Books first contest. You may have followed the race for downloads that heated up in the second half of the contest. Now the tally is completed and here is the winning book for the first category - Most Read (downloaded):

The Little Suitcase, written by Andrea Azevedo and calligraphy by Madison Oser

The next top four books in this category were:
  • Philmore, Xebob and the Impossibility Theory written by Lucas Spata and illustrated by Chris Strebly
  • Frustrated Feet written and illustrated by May Wang
  • Knee Deep in Sheep written by Andrea Azevedo and illustrated by Lou Dahl
  • Sloogie had a Boogie written by Andrea Azevedo and illustrated by Patricia Sauer
All three authors listed in the top five downloaded books were very active in promoting their books. Lucas Spata has created a foundation to direct the proceeds of his writing to children going through cancer treatment. May Wang published her book at the end of January and despite having only the second half of the contest time to promote her book May was very effective at gathering an audience for her Frustrated Feet. Well Done!

Winner Andrea Azevedo took several initiatives in the last two weeks of the contest to help The Little Suitcase come back from behind and take the lead. We will feature an interview with Andrea in the next few days and we asked her to share some of the ideas she used to promote her books.

Our second prize was for the Most Loved Book based on a weighed average of the appreciation votes entered by registered users. The winning book is:

The Little Suitcase, written by Andrea Azevedo and calligraphy by Madison Oser

The next four books in this category are:
  • Philmore, Xebob and the Impossibility Theory written by Lucas Spata and illustrated by Chris Strebly
  • Shark Pool written by Jennifer Poulter and Illustrated by James Messer
  • Sloogie had a Boogie written by Andrea Azevedo and illustrated by Patricia Sauer
  • Pet Pup written by Jennifer Poulter and illustrated by E. R. Stanton
You may recall if you read the story of Sharing-Books on our site, that The Little Suitcase was the book that triggered the creation of Sharing-Books. We tease Andrea that all this work (and fun) is all her fault. So it is fitting that after a tough race she wins this first contest. Andrea and her co-creators have pledged all their revenue from The Little Suitcase to the benefit of the hospital that took care of Dylan Oser, the young boy who inspired the book.

As this was our first contest, we forgot to give it a name. As we will offer many contests we will simply refer to this one as "Contest Number One" to distinguish it from upcoming contests. Stay tuned as we plan to announce our next contest very soon.

Thanks to all the Creators!

A thank you to all the authors, illustrators, editors, creators, PDF makers, and go-getters who got their books uploaded to the site by the 31st of January, 2009. You guys did some great work, and though they all may not have shown up on the site quite yet, we have a bunch of books under review and getting ready to roll out.

Thank you all for your work!

To everyone who found and had any problems getting their work on the site, thank you for your patience. Hopefully our emails to you were clear enough to follow! We're taking all the feedback and planning some changes down the road to streamline things, and make the whole process easier and smoother for everyone involved.

Over the next month or so I am hoping to put together some blog posts that are basic tutorials on how to get your work up on the site, and how to deal with the standard questions that creators were sending me as they uploaded work for the contest.

The next phase for everyone who's uploaded their work as of the 31st is to get out there and get people reading your work, spreading your brand, and voting on your books! We've provided the place for your work, a showcase online, and the next phase is all about getting your brand to spread. Thanks again for all your work everyone!
